How tall will my child be? You can calculate it with this formula

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as the saying goes. But does that always apply to the height of a child?

When your daughter already has huge feet at the age of eight, it’s easy to feel queasy. How tall might the little one become? So that you don’t have to puzzle any longer: Here is a simple formula that is also used by most pediatricians.
Of course, no formula in the world can predict an exact result to the millimeter, but this formula gives an important tendency. With a variation of only five centimeters up and down, it can predict how tall your child will be.

These factors play a role

A child’s height depends on several factors. On the one hand, height is genetically determined, i.e. it depends on how tall the child’s parents are.

But of course, daily habits, the child’s general state of health, his or her diet and how much and what kind of sport he or she does also play a not insignificant role in height.

Nevertheless, a lot can be predicted by looking at the height of the mother and father.

The question of all questions: How tall will my child be?

Here is a formula that you can use to calculate approximately how tall your little one will be.

Only three things are important for the calculation: the height of the father in centimeters, the height of the mother in centimeters and the sex of the child.

How tall will my son be?

To calculate the height of a boy, proceed as follows:

• Add the height of the mother in centimeters and the height of the father in centimeters.
• Divide this sum by 2.
• Then add 6.5 centimeters

The result gives you an idea of how tall your son can become. However, you should bear in mind that the result can deviate by five centimeters, both upwards and downwards.

Calculation example for a boy :
If we take a father who is 186 cm tall and a mother who is 170 cm tall, the sum is 356 cm. Divided by 2, that is 178 cm. If we now add 6.5 cm to this result, we get an expected height of 184.5 cm for the son.

However, the result can deviate by 5 centimeters up and down, so the height will be between 179.5 and 189.5 cm.

For girls, the expected height is calculated differently. Here, the 6.5 centimeters are subtracted at the end.

How tall will my daughter be ?

To calculate the height of a girl, proceed similarly to calculating the height of a boy :

• First add the height of the mother in centimeters and the height of the father in centimeters.
• Divide this sum by 2
• Now subtract 6.5 centimeters from this result.

Then you know approximately how tall your daughter can become. But here too, the result can deviate by five centimeters both upwards and downwards.

Calculation example for a girl :
If we take the same father, who is 186 cm tall, and the same mother, who is 170 cm tall, the sum is 356 cm. Divided by 2, that is 178 cm. If we now subtract 6.5 cm from this result, we get an expected height of 171.5 cm for the daughter.

However, the result can deviate by 5 centimeters up and down, so the body height will be between 166.5 and 176.5 cm.

Variations are not unusual

Variations in the ratio of age to height are not uncommon in children, because every child grows at his or her own pace. If, for example, the parents were always the smallest or even the tallest in kindergarten and school, it stands to reason that the child’s height will also go in this direction.
